VAN GOGH INSPIRED COLLAGES

Description: For this project, we learned about the artist Vincent Van Gogh. We talked about information from his past about what influenced him to be an artist, when he started making art, and facts about his personal life as well. While learning about Vincent Van Gogh, we wrote down notes that we thought were interesting to add as an attachment at the bottom of our art work. One thing that we talked about was one of the styles that Van Gogh used was a swirling pattern in his backgrounds. For this project, we created a Van Gogh- inspired landscape collage. I decided to create a sunset theme in a city. I used a variety of pinks and purples to create the sky. I also added in building with lights on in the windows to signify that it is night out. The background was created with ripping tissue paper into strips and adhering it to the paper with an acrylic medium. Then we let that dry, and the next class period we added our landscape over the background. I cut out my buildings, and used marker, color pencils, and oil pastels to create a road, car, windows, and added a pattern to the background to give it more dimension.

Extension Activity: For an extension activity that would relate to this project would be a language arts activity. I would have the create their landscape after teaching them about Vincent Van Gogh and then do a creative writing activity. After the students wrote a story about their project, they would switch projects with a partner and without telling them what they wrote about, they would write a creative story to go along with their partners landscape and then compare in the end.
