Favorite Things About Autumn

Description: This project was taught by McKayla Johnston, and her lesson was listening to the book Pete The Cat, and listen for his favorite things about Autumn. This was a great comprehension and listening objective for young learners. First we listened to the audio book, and it had a video with animations that went along with the reading. While we listened to the book our goal was to listen for what Pete's favorite things about Autumn were, and think about what are favorites are. After the book we shared with our partner our favorite things, and shared to the class what we came up with. Next, we got into our art project, and it was creating a pumpkin and in each category we put a drawing of our favorite things about Autumn. We had to have at least 3 sections of illustrations, and the other ones could have words.

Extension Activity: For an extension activity, students could use their drawings as an introduction to a language arts lesson. For the lesson students could be working on different types of writing, and the one that we would learn about for the activity would be opinion writing. I would teach what opinion writing is, what it is used for, and then the students would create their own story using opinion writing. I would instruct the students to have an introduction, body paragraphs about their favorite things about Autumn, and a conclusion. The students would have time to fill out a graphic organizer to help them determine what their main paragraphs will be and the supporting details they are going to use for them. They should have most of their ideas already because they have illustrated them in the art project that they would have already made.
