Pumpkin Patch

Description: This is the activity that I taught to the class. It was a lesson on the artist George Seurat, pointillism, color theory, and the four seasons. First I will start class by going over the PowerPoint that I have that goes over the four topics. We will talk about the Artist, George Seurat and that he is known for pointillism. Then I will introduce our science lesson of the four seasons and the characteristics about each season. Next, we will talk about color theory, and how to mix colors to create a new color because that is what we will be needing to do for part of our activity. I will introduce the art projects and have the students do a pre-assessment by practicing drawing their pumpkins and trees on a separate sheet of paper. I will start by showing an example of how I draw pumpkins and trees. On the board I will show the students to start with the horizon on their water color paper, and then move into drawing the pumpkins and trees. Once they have finished, I will have them paint their sky first so it has time to try to add the leaves. Then the students can use crayons to outline their pumpkins and color them in. After that, they can go in and paint behind the pumpkins. The crayon will be partially resistant to the water color so if students chose to they can water color over their pumpkin. Once their sky is dry, we will use our q-tips and use the pointillism technique to create our leaves. Students will have the chance to compare and contrast their paintings with a partner.

Extension Activity: For an extension activity, students could use this as a language arts lesson and write a story about their favorite season. They could include the activities that happen during that season, why it is their favorite season, and write about a favorite memory they have from their favorite season.
