Culture Lights

Description: This lesson was taught by Kaitlyn M. First she introduced different type of holiday lights and showed us three different cultures and their different variation of holiday lights. Not all cultures are the same, but they are beautiful in the way they celebrate. After learning about the different cultures she introduced the art activity. We used oil pastels to create our own lights that represent us and make us unique. Kaitlyn walked us through step by step of how to create our project. There were 8 different questions on the board that determined what colors our lights would be. For example: the first question was "If you have siblings, color your bulb purple. If you are an only child, color your bulb pink." I thought this was a great way to show that everyone is unique but still beautiful.

Extension Activity: For an extension activity I would use this project as a writing prompt. This would be for 3rd graders as they are starting to get into the writing process. Students would be doing a "What makes me unique" writing assignment and I would use this oil pastels art project to facilitate their learning.
